It’s that time of the year when South Africa kicks off its fashion season, where we show our support for local designers and see what trends they are predicting for the months ahead. Fashion snobs and the so-called fashionistas will intimidate you on social media and make you think that fashion is only for the elite and wealthy, but they’re wrong!
Fashion is for everyone, unless you don’t own or wear any clothes. I’ve been attending Fashion Week for the past four years and from my experience, here are some of the essential tips first-time FW goers need to know.
Dress Your Best
When I attended my very first SA Fashion Week I really wanted to create the right impression, especially as I wanted a career in fashion. Like many students I didn’t really have money for new clothes, so I spent hours online looking for references that would work with my wardrobe. I took clothes I already owned and then wore them differently. I believe that when it comes to creating a style that works for you – always just be yourself.
We all have designers and fashion influencers that we look up to, so do your research to find out who will be at the different shows. This is the perfect opportunity to interact with the people who inspire you, and it gives you the chance to make a memorable impression.
One of the worst things that can happen to you at fashion week is your phone battery going flat. Bring your cable and power bank so you can capture all the action and share the important moments on social media.
For your first Fashion Week it’s a good idea to bring along a friend who you know will enjoy the experience. Between each show is a 30-minute break, and it’s boring (not to mention awkward!) if you’re just chilling alone.
Now that you’re armed with this info, get your outfit ready and make your grand entrance at Fashion Week. The Threaded Man team will be there, so come over and say hi!
