Byron Ryan is the founder of boutique men’s store Stache and one of South Africa’s most stylish gents. His store stocks local premium brands such as Sgnt Pepper. The Threaded Man caught up with him for a chat.

How did you get into fashion?

I have always been passionate about fashion and from a young age I appreciated trendy clothing. It was just a natural step.

What made you want to open your own store?

After being in the industry for some time and working with a few great brands, I wanted to create my own concept and offer stylish and trendy brands and designs for the modern man.

Why the name Stache?

After writing pages and pages of names, a friend of mine walked in with a terrible moustache. I commented on his ‘stache and the name pretty much stuck.

What do you think of the South Africa men’s fashion industry and local brands?

I think that the men’s fashion industry is growing at an incredible rate and that men are becoming more aware of good designs and fits. The local designers are definitely on point and are doing some amazing things.

As men in South Africa where do we go wrong when it comes to style?

I find the most common problem with men is fit. Men do not wear clothing that fits correctly.

Describe your style and your must have items right now?

I love denim. I am almost always in denim. You can dress it up or wear it casually and denim always looks good. Must haves will include chuck tailors and a Daniel Wellington Watch. I’m loving the DW watches at the moment.

What’s the future looking like for Stache?

We are currently going through an expansion project and we will be looking for some new locations to open more stores. We are also bringing some awesome new local and international brands on board that are not available in the country at the moment. So get excited!
