South African Fashion Week wrapped up its Spring/Summer 2017 edition last night following five days of shows and presentations which saw emerging and established designers alike showcasing their latest collections and fashion enthusiasts flocking to The Park, Hyde Park Corner to see what the designers had to offer.

Day 5 was yet another (mainly) menswear showcase and it ended on a high note.

Black Coffee
Black Coffee tried to capitalise on the rising trend of androgyny as we saw both male and female models strutting down the runway. The designer opted for faux dreadlocks and a heavy smoky eye on all the models to achieve a gender blurring effect.
Though this collection is different to the 2017 Autumn/Winter one which was way brighter, the distinctive fabrication and signature geometric shapes that make Black Coffee designs standout were still there. Apart from the burst of orange on a few garments, black, white and greys permeated the collection with subtle injections of dusty pink and red here and there.

Floyd Avenue
2016 SAFW Scouting Menswear competition winner, Floyd Avenue, showcased a compact collection with only 12 looks; a bit of a let down but he didn’t necessarily disappoint. With a sleek polished aesthetic, Floyd Avenue reworks basic items and gives them relaxed silhouettes which drape loosely on the body in muted tones – dark camo, olive and burgundy. Key items included a knee length hoodie (look familiar?), a jumpsuit, shirts, a blazer and loose fitting pants with tassel drawstrings.

The brand’s showcase was opened by veteran model Stevel Marc walking down the runway in a slim fitting blue suit which showed off the brand’s tailoring skills. The high energy brought on by the music – old school RnB, Hip-Hop and Kwaito – (or were people just glad the week was finally over?) matched the collection which had loud and eclectic graphic insertions. From slogan tees, pants and shirts in vivid floral prints, to red and black scribbles on white fabric and embroidered patches of flowers and birds – big birds, this collection had items for different types of men.
