From box handbags to flared pants and kimonos, these are the most prominent trends we picked up on at Xperience AFI and MBFWJ17.

Flared pants and culottes – from street style to the runway, the palazzo pants are back. Interestingly designers favored the ¾ style for both male and female versions.  We saw the best of this from designer Narok NYC, and the stylish Lerato Kgamanyane.

Pleats– whether embedded on airy linen shirts, bold complex dresses or formal pants, we were treated to diverse implementations of pleats. Our favorite had to be from designers…though most of us would struggle maintaining the design on our clothes, they are too hard to resist.

Box/square handbags– boy did we see plenty of these, I’m not complaining because damn, they are gorgeous! They were all unique and whether paired with a great outfit or a complete fail, the bag is a huge hit. Thula Sindi’s range featured gold studded pleather versions, celebrity Nadia Nakai rocked a black and white set with a gold belt, the best definitely was the vintage range with floral embroidery from Tsotetski KL These are complete must have for any hand bag fan.

Kimonos– I’m not sure if I’m sick of them or I’m just warming up to this traditional Japanese inspired trend. There were very few people who got this right for me, the threaded boss himself definitely did it right, rocking a black and white Kimono half tucked in like a street fighter. Designer Rufftung gave us a glorious ocean floral range that could not be ignored. I think this one is going to be overdone more than glitter in the 60s, but in the meantime it’s here to stay.

Sporty-  I am loving this trend which was beautifully interpreted by OHYESLORD in a variety of bright colours. The trend could also be seen from the likes of Narok NYC who like many interpreted the trend by rather using the vertical stripes on their trousers. Vizuvlgvds collection gave us a unique take with his grey, black and white ensembles, beautifully done.
