Over the past few months I have expressed over and over that just because it’s summer, it doesn’t mean that you have to look sloppy just because you’re wearing cooler clothes. In December I posted “How to look smart in summer” to help you with just that, and now I want to go into more detail by highlighting a key summer piece.

The polo shirt is a classic and I highly recommend that you have a few in your wardrobe, as it can really give you that summer style without compromising your tailored look. Here is a guide on how it should fit, along with a few suggestions for how you can wear your polo shirt in summer.

  •  The sleeves should cut off mid-bicep
  • The hem of the shirt shouldn’t go past the fly on your trousers
  • Check the neck opening, if your neck looks too skinny then the shirt is too big, and if you can’t do up your top button, then the shirt is too small

These are the top three ways to wear your polo shirt this summer.

Replacing the shirtParty-Editorial5

The best thing about polo shirts is that they are casual enough to wear at an informal setting but formal enough to replace an oxford shirt for a cooler and more comfortable summer outfit. Wearing a polo shirt with your suit still makes you look tailored, but you’ll feel more relaxed and look less stuffy.

dad3Preppy is my recommend look for the office as it’s a good blend of casual and formal – without seeming to try too hard. To look preppy, wear smart pants or chinos with white sneakers or slip-ons, and finish the outfit with a golfer. This style is perfect for summer daytime functions.

Sports luxe

The polo shirt has a very strong athletic heritage, coming from sports like tennis and golf, so it will fit seamlessly into any sporty look. Pair your golfer with a nice tailored jogger and sneakers to give yourself the ultimate street ensemble.
