You know him as one of the three members of Dreamteam and the dapper Dash on Vuzu’s V-Entertainment – Mthoko “Dash” Mkhathini is having a style evolution and we’ve noticed. The rapper and TV presenter has been spotted playing with various looks and exuding effortless style. He has really captured our attention at The Threaded Man for being one of the view South African male celebrities who’ve understood that the way you look matters for your brand! He is on the current cover of Sowetan’s SMag and has been chosen as one of three influencers for AXE’s new brand strategy, #FindYourMagic.
Dash took time to answer a few of our questions on his style and take on fashion.
TTM: How would you describe your personal style?
DASH: I would definitely describe my style as ‘unpredictable’ only because I’ve learnt to switch from elegant to street and still maintain a certain level of uniqueness & authenticity.
T: We have definitely seen a change and evolution in your brand outside of being a musician – has this been deliberate and how far would you like to take this?
D: Yes, this was the right time to introduce Dash Mkhathini as a individual…without hindering the groups goals & identity. I’ve always been a entertainer it’s just that music was the initial outlet that reached the masses first. My desire is to expand & consistently take part in all the fields I’m passionate about such as Entrepreneurship, Art & Design, TV & Fashion
T: Congrats on the SMAG Cover – very threaded! What was the idea behind going with that look for the cover?
D: The beauty of that cover shoot was that it was very impromptu, it wasn’t initially intended for the cover until post shoot. SMag wanted to write about my style & substance so they gave me freedom to style & direct my own shoot. I really wanted to bring back the classic clean look, Sophiatown vibe. The items are well fitted & the fabric of the trousers give it that funk.
T: What would you say should always be in our readers’ closets in terms of clothing items?
D: Always have black fitted denims, they just too versatile. Crisp white shirt also goes with any outfit. Not forgetting a perfect pair of shades that suits your facial structure.
T: Your thoughts on hip hop musicians like Pharrell, ASAP Rocky, Kanye West, etc. being key players in dictating the creative direction of high fashion brands? Is this something you would also like to venture into?
D: I truly admire the names you’ve mentioned, what I find even more interesting is how each of them have found different creative avenues as to how they put a stamp in the world of fashion, merchandising & retail. I personally feel everything you do or get into must be organic, in order for it to be a success. I’m keen to collaborate with some great minds & do some iconic shit!
T: What is your go-to look?
D: Bright hat, colour shirt (print), black skinny denims & a pair of cool Chelsea boots.
